Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau Make Red Carpet Debut at Tribeca Festival

Russell Brand and Katy Perry’s relationship began in 2009, when Brand proposed during a holiday in India only months after they first met. The couple later returned to India and married on October 23, 2010, in a traditional Hindu ceremony held in a tiger park. Their marriage ended less than two years later, when Brand told Perry by text in December 2011 that he wanted a divorce.

Perry has previously spoken about the emotional impact of the split, including in her concert documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me. She also addressed the pain in songs on her 2013 album Prism, including “Ghost” and “By the Grace of God,” which reflected on loss and recovery after the breakup.

In an April 2025 episode of his podcast, Brand revisited the marriage and offered a public explanation of why it ended. He said Perry was not “weird or off key,” describing her instead as an extraordinary and massive star. Brand also said he had seen nothing “nefarious” about her behavior during their relationship.

Brand added that the reasons the marriage failed were “normal human reasons” and emphasized that he still holds respect for Perry. His remarks come years after the couple’s high-profile split, which drew widespread attention at the time and continued to be referenced in both of their careers.

The relationship remains one of the most talked-about celebrity marriages of the early 2010s, partly because of its fast-moving start, the unusual setting of their wedding, and the emotional aftermath that followed. Perry transformed much of that experience into her music and documentary work, while Brand’s recent comments suggest a more reflective tone on the breakup.
