John Tortorella Says There Is No Concern Over Smith

Vegas Golden Knights fans briefly worried after Game 3 of the club’s 5-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche when a Smith appeared to be hurt late in the game. The concern turned out to be about Cole Smith, not Reilly Smith, and coach John Tortorella said afterward that there is no concern about Cole Smith’s status.

The confusion came as the Golden Knights continue their Stanley Cup playoff run and every healthy contributor matters. Cole Smith has not been a major scorer in the postseason, but he remains valuable for other reasons. His early production against the Utah Mammoth included two goals and two assists in that series, yet he has not scored since Game 6. He also leads the Golden Knights in penalty minutes with 20, showing how physical and aggressive his game has been.

That physical edge is part of why the Golden Knights want him available. Smith is considered an effective penalty killer when he is staying out of the box, and he helps move the puck out of danger with quick exits from the defensive zone. He is also one of the team’s more forceful hitters, using body contact to wear down opponents and disrupt plays. Through the postseason, he has recorded 63 hits, a number that highlights the hard-edged style Vegas has leaned on during its playoff push.

The Golden Knights are now one win away from advancing, and their blend of scoring, defense, and physicality has put them in position to keep pressuring the rest of the league. Even if the team’s offense comes from a star like Mitch Marner or another key skater, the roster also depends on role players who can finish checks, kill penalties, and keep the game tilted in Vegas’ favor.

For now, the injury scare appears to have been limited to the moment itself. Cole Smith is not considered a serious concern, and the Golden Knights can focus on closing out the series with their full playoff identity intact: skilled enough to score, tough enough to punish, and deep enough to keep every line involved.
