Iowa Weather Alert: Severe Storms Expected Wednesday and Thursday

Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected in Iowa this evening, with the greatest risk focused mainly south of Interstate 80 and east of Interstate 35. The storms could bring large hail, damaging winds, and possibly a tornado or two. The line of storms is expected to move out of the area around 10 p.m. to 11 p.m., followed by a brief quiet period overnight before another potent round of storms arrives early Thursday morning.
After a lull that may last until around 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday, a new line of storms is forecast to move into the state. This system could produce damaging wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph, along with more hail and isolated tornadoes. Some rain and clouds may remain into late Thursday morning, which could reduce the amount of energy available for additional storms later in the day. Even so, forecasters say there is still a chance for another round of strong to severe weather Thursday afternoon and evening, especially east of Interstate 35 and south of Marshalltown.
A Flood Watch remains in effect for central Iowa through 11 a.m. Thursday. The exact severity of the late-day Thursday storms will depend on how much the atmosphere can recover after the morning storms clear out. If conditions recharge enough, the same areas could see another round of impactful storms.
Weather conditions are expected to improve Thursday night, and Friday should bring a much calmer pattern. Sunshine and mostly dry weather are forecast, with highs in the low 80s. Another weather system is expected to arrive Saturday, bringing a renewed chance for strong storms across Iowa. Forecast details for that system remain uncertain, but outdoor plans on Saturday may be affected.
Once the Saturday system passes, north winds are expected to usher in cooler and more comfortable conditions. Highs should settle into the low to mid-70s, with dew points in the low 50s. Dry weather and seasonable temperatures are expected to continue through at least the middle of next week.
For today’s forecast, scattered morning showers may give way to a hot and windy afternoon before storms develop by evening. High temperatures are expected near 88 degrees, with a heat index around 100 degrees and wind gusts up to 35 mph. Tonight, thunderstorms are expected, with severe weather possible, especially in eastern Iowa. Thursday brings another round of storms, including a threat for severe weather in southeast Iowa, before clearing overnight and turning cooler by Friday.
