French Open Live: Latest Scores and Results as Elina Svitolina Faces Marta Kostyuk in All-Ukrainian Quarter-Final After Mirra Andreeva Advances Quickly
Ukraine is set to make tennis history at the French Open as Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk faced each other for a place in the semifinals, guaranteeing that at least one Ukrainian woman will reach the last four at Roland Garros for the first time in the Open era. Both players arrived in strong form on clay this season, with Svitolina winning the Rome title and Kostyuk capturing the Madrid title and stringing together a remarkable run of 16 consecutive clay-court victories. The matchup carried added significance because the two have long been among Ukraine’s leading players, but only one could advance to the semifinals in Paris.
The quarterfinal began with Kostyuk making the sharper start. Her movement and foot speed allowed her to dictate early rallies, turn defense into attack and surge ahead by a break. The 23-year-old, seeded 15th, also came into the match on the back of one of the biggest wins of her career, having beaten four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek in the fourth round. Kostyuk looked composed and aggressive as she moved into a commanding position in the opening set.
Svitolina, the seventh seed, responded with her trademark resilience and experience. At 31, she has previously reached four Grand Slam semifinals, including at Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open, though she has yet to go beyond that stage. After Kostyuk failed to convert a break point that would have put her 5-1 ahead, Svitolina held firm, regained control of the baseline exchanges and broke back when Kostyuk sent a backhand wide. That shift brought the match back on serve and changed the momentum.
Svitolina then completed her comeback by taking the second set, capitalizing on a dip in Kostyuk’s level and forcing a deciding set. The seventh seed’s greater experience in the biggest moments began to show as she settled into the contest and made Kostyuk work harder for every point. What had looked like a quick start for Kostyuk evolved into a tense battle as Svitolina grew in confidence and pressure mounted on the younger player.
Elsewhere in the women’s draw, Mirra Andreeva advanced emphatically to the semifinals for the second time in her career, beating Sorana Cirstea 6-0, 6-3. The 19-year-old Russian dominated in heavy conditions and remains one of the tournament’s standout performers. Andreeva, who first broke through at Roland Garros in 2024, continues to build on her rapid rise and will next face the winner of the Ukrainian clash.
The day also featured a major night-session spotlight for Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-3 in a high-profile match under the lights on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Sabalenka praised organizers for giving women’s tennis the stage and said she hoped the occasion would encourage more women’s matches in future night sessions. The world number one’s victory extended her consistency at the majors and strengthened her bid for a first French Open title.
