French Open 2026: Alexander Zverev beats Rafael Jodar to reach semi-finals, sets up Jakub Mensik clash

Jakub Mensik defeated Joao Fonseca in a tense French Open quarter-final to continue his rise as one of the most promising young players in men’s tennis. The matchup between the 20-year-old Czech and the 19-year-old Brazilian was billed as a glimpse of the sport’s next generation, with both players seen as potential challengers to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the years ahead.
Mensik, playing in his first Grand Slam quarter-final, started strongly and used his powerful serve to build a two-set lead without facing a break point. He later admitted he felt early nerves, but remained composed as the match progressed. Fonseca, who had already shown his fighting spirit earlier in the tournament by recovering from two sets down twice, again produced stretches of high-quality tennis and pushed Mensik hard in the third set.
The third set became the highlight of the contest and lasted close to 80 minutes. Fonseca twice moved ahead with a break of serve, only for Mensik to respond and pull the set back on serve. At 6-5 down, the Brazilian saved six match points in a dramatic 12th game to stay alive and force a tie-break. Mensik then took control of the breaker to seal a 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win.
After the match, Mensik said the contest featured “incredible shots” at the end and praised his own ability to stay focused under pressure. He said he was pleased to come back after being a break down on a couple of occasions and credited his determination to keep fighting until the finish.
The result sends Mensik into the French Open semi-finals and makes him the first Czech man to reach a Grand Slam singles semi-final since Tomas Berdych at Wimbledon in 2017. The victory is also expected to move him back into the world’s top 20, marking another major step in his rapid development.
Fonseca, despite the defeat, again showed why he is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in tennis. His run in Paris included a standout victory over 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, and his performance against Mensik confirmed his ability to compete with elite opponents on the biggest stages.
With both players still teenagers and already making deep runs at a major, their quarter-final meeting reinforced the sense that men’s tennis is entering a new era. Mensik’s combination of power, composure and serving strength proved decisive this time, but both athletes left Paris with their reputations enhanced and their futures firmly in the spotlight.
