Everything We Know About the Snowfall Spinoff Series The Drop

FX is returning to the world of Snowfall with a new spinoff titled The Drop: A Snowfall Saga, set in 1990s Los Angeles and expected to premiere later in 2026 on FX and Hulu, with international streaming on Disney+. The series shifts the focus from the crack epidemic of the 1980s to the rise of West Coast rap, continuing the story in a city still shaped by the trauma, violence, and ambition left behind in the original show.

The new series will center on Wanda and Leon, played again by Gail Bean and Isaiah John. Both characters were among the most compelling survivors in Snowfall, and their return gives the spinoff an emotional anchor. Wanda’s storyline in the original series dealt with addiction, recovery, relapse, and redemption, while Leon evolved from Franklin Saint’s loyal enforcer into someone searching for a different life and a greater sense of purpose. Their relationship ended up representing one of the few hopeful threads in the final stretch of the show.

According to the official logline, The Drop follows Wanda and Leon as they work to help bring West Coast rap into the mainstream while gang conflicts intensify and record labels move in to profit from hip-hop culture. The premise connects naturally to Snowfall, which examined how the drug trade transformed South Central Los Angeles, tore families apart, and left lasting damage that did not disappear when the money did. The spinoff appears ready to explore the next chapter of that history, showing how a new cultural movement rises in the same environment of pressure, exploitation, and survival.

The cast also includes Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie “Buddy” Sims III, along with Mykelti Williamson, Nicki Micheaux, Brandon Mychal Smith, Isidora Goreshter, Eric Balfour, Richard Portnow, Zaire Adams, Demetrius Grosse, and Quincy Chad, who appeared in Snowfall. FX ordered the series after it had been in development since 2023 and received a pilot order in 2025, confirming that the project is moving forward as a full series rather than remaining in development.

Behind the scenes, Malcolm Spellman is serving as an executive producer alongside several key Snowfall creatives, including Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, Trevor Engelson, and Paul Garnes. That creative continuity suggests FX is aiming to preserve the tone and emotional depth that made Snowfall one of the network’s most talked-about dramas.

Created by John Singleton, Snowfall ran for six seasons and stood out for its unflinching portrayal of drugs, power, government involvement, and the toll on Black communities. The Drop now has the opportunity to connect two defining eras of Los Angeles history: the aftermath of the crack years and the rise of rap as both art and industry. With music, gang politics, and the fight for cultural control at its center, the spinoff is positioned to explore how success, exploitation, and survival continue to overlap in the city’s story.
