Elisabeth Moss Explains Why June’s Rescue of Hannah Is “Complicated” in The Testaments

Elisabeth Moss has addressed the emotional and practical limits facing June in the Season 1 finale of Hulu’s The Testaments, explaining why rescuing Hannah/Agnes is not something that can happen quickly. After the finale revealed that June now knows Daisy is connected to Hannah, the story raised the possibility of another rescue attempt, but Moss said the situation is far more complicated than a simple extraction.

According to Moss, Hannah is not being held in obvious misery at every moment. Instead, she is living in a relatively comfortable home, has friends, and has spent years being shaped by Gilead’s influence. That makes the situation harder than a traditional rescue, because Hannah has also been indoctrinated into the system June has spent years fighting. Moss’ comments underline one of the central tensions of the series: saving someone from Gilead is not only about physically reaching them, but also about overcoming the psychological hold Gilead has on them.

The finale delivered several major revelations. June realized that Daisy already knows Hannah/Agnes, while Daisy discovered the identity of her birth mother. These developments deepen the connection between the characters and set up larger emotional stakes for the story moving forward. The final moments also included June reading Daisy’s note, and the episode hinted that Baby Nichole may have appeared as well.

However, showrunner Bruce Miller clarified that the young girl shown in the final scene is not necessarily Daisy’s older version from the novel. In the television adaptation, Miller wanted Daisy and Hannah/Agnes to be close in age, which changes the dynamic from the book and leaves room for the possibility that the child seen playing is actually June’s younger daughter, Baby Nichole. That ambiguity adds another layer of anticipation as the series heads into future episodes.

June’s history on The Handmaid’s Tale also explains why a rescue plan may not be straightforward. She repeatedly tried to save Hannah over the course of that series, but those efforts often pushed Hannah farther away from her. Now that Hannah is older and more deeply influenced by Gilead, the challenge is even greater. The finale suggests that Daisy may become an important part of helping Hannah question her life and recognize that she needs to leave Gilead behind.

The ending of The Handmaid’s Tale left some viewers disappointed that June and Luke never managed to bring Hannah home. But fans who know the source material understood that the story required a different path. Now, with June aware of where her daughter is and The Testaments renewed for Season 2, the spinoff appears ready to explore that next chapter.

The Testaments is streaming on Hulu.
