Cristiano Ronaldo Takes Aim at Manchester United Star in Cryptic Message

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo once made a sharp prediction about a teammate’s future at Old Trafford, saying the player would “not make it” at the club. Dalot did not name the former Red Devil, but his comments have sparked debate among fans trying to identify who Ronaldo may have been referring to.

Dalot shared the pitch with Ronaldo during the Portuguese star’s second spell at Manchester United, which began in August 2021. Writing for The Players’ Tribune, Dalot said that period was hugely important in his development as both a footballer and a person. He described Ronaldo as intensely observant, endlessly demanding, and unusually accurate in judging the mentality of those around him.

According to Dalot, Ronaldo would notice even small details, such as whether a teammate skipped work in the gym. The right back recalled a story in which a United striker had scored twice in a match and was praised by Dalot, only for Ronaldo to dismiss the performance and argue that the player lacked the hunger to go further. Dalot said Ronaldo’s assessment proved correct in that case, though he did not identify the player involved.

The comments have led supporters and analysts to search through Manchester United’s recent seasons to work out who Ronaldo may have meant. In his first season back in 2021–22, the only player besides Ronaldo to score a brace for United was Bruno Fernandes, but the midfielder does not fit the description of a striker who failed to establish himself at the club. Fernandes has remained a key figure at Old Trafford and has since enjoyed one of the strongest periods of his career.

That has led some to believe Dalot may have been referring to the 2022–23 season instead, before Ronaldo left the club in December 2022. During that campaign, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford both recorded braces early in the season and each has had a complicated spell at United for different reasons. Martial’s time at the club was marked by inconsistency and injuries, despite scoring 79 goals in 269 appearances and helping United win several trophies, including the 2016–17 Europa League. Rashford, meanwhile, enjoyed a major rise after scoring 138 goals in 426 appearances, but his recent form declined sharply before loan moves away from United.

Other names have also been mentioned by fans, including Jadon Sancho, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood, though none clearly match the clue given in Dalot’s story. Sancho and Cavani did not score braces during Ronaldo’s second spell, while Greenwood never did so while Ronaldo was his teammate.

Dalot’s account offers another glimpse into Ronaldo’s influence at United, showing how the veteran forward remained uncompromising in his standards and quick to judge whether teammates had the mentality to succeed at the highest level.
