Bedford bin collection times brought forward due to heatwave

Bedford Borough Council has urged residents to place their bins out overnight as crews begin waste collections earlier than usual to reduce the risk of missed pickups during a spell of hot weather.
The council said its collection teams have been starting rounds at 06:00 BST instead of the normal 07:00 BST in response to sustained high temperatures in the area. The change has been introduced to help protect workers from heat-related illness while still maintaining regular waste services for residents.
Temperatures in Bedfordshire have been above 30C for several days, according to the report, and are expected to remain in the mid to high 20Cs for the rest of the week. The council said the earlier start times are one of the ways it is trying to keep services running safely and reliably as conditions remain warm.
In a message posted on Facebook, Bedford Borough mayor Tom Wootton said the council understood how important dependable bin collections are for local people. He said bringing collection start times forward would help ensure services continue during the hot spell.
Residents have been advised to put bins out the night before their scheduled collection day so they are ready for crews starting earlier than usual. The council said this would help prevent bins being missed if crews pass through streets before people are awake or have had time to place them outside.
Hot weather can create challenges for outdoor workers, particularly those carrying out physically demanding jobs such as waste collection. Local authorities often adjust working hours during periods of extreme heat to reduce exposure and protect staff wellbeing.
The council’s advice comes as much of England experiences a stretch of warmer-than-average weather. While temperatures in Bedford are expected to ease slightly from the recent peak above 30C, conditions are still forecast to stay warm enough to justify the change in working hours.
Waste and recycling services are a key part of local council operations, and any disruption can quickly affect households. By moving collections forward, Bedford Borough Council aims to balance public service delivery with safety measures for its workforce.
The council’s appeal is a reminder for residents to check collection times during hot weather, especially when local schedules may change at short notice. Keeping bins accessible from the night before may help avoid missed pickups and ensure crews can complete rounds efficiently in the earlier morning hours.
Bedford Borough Council said it would continue monitoring conditions as temperatures remain elevated, with the priority of protecting staff while keeping essential bin collections running for residents.
