AFL 2026: Chris Fagan Addresses Lachie Neale’s Future Speculation at Brisbane Lions
Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan has addressed growing speculation around the future of star midfielder Lachie Neale, saying it would be a “head scratcher” if the two-time premiership player chose to move to Melbourne. Neale is out of contract at the end of the year, and his next move has become one of the key talking points of the AFL trade period.
Reports have linked Neale with a possible return to Perth, where he could be closer to his children, or a move to South Australia, where his parents live. If he does decide to leave Brisbane, several Melbourne clubs are expected to be interested, with Collingwood reportedly among the leading suitors.
Fagan said he is not trying to interfere in Neale’s personal decision, acknowledging that family considerations could play a major role in what happens next. He said the issue is more complicated than it may appear from the outside and stressed that he prefers not to get deeply involved in the private lives of his players.
At the same time, Fagan made clear that Brisbane wants to keep Neale at the club. He said the Lions will make an offer in an effort to retain him, but ultimately the decision sits with Neale because he is a free agent. Fagan added that his conversations with the midfielder have mostly focused on checking in with his wellbeing rather than discussing contract details.
Neale has reportedly faced a difficult year, with significant scrutiny and pressure surrounding his personal circumstances. Fagan said his main concern as coach is making sure Neale is doing okay, and that the club understands any decision he makes will be shaped by factors beyond football.
The situation leaves Brisbane hopeful but uncertain as it waits for Neale to decide on his future. If he stays, the Lions will be pleased to keep one of their most important players. If he leaves, interest from rival clubs is expected to be strong, particularly in Victoria.
