Madonna’s “I Feel So Free” Becomes Her First No. 1 Radio Hit in 18 Years

Madonna returns to No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart as “I Feel So Free” climbs 8-1 on the May 30 ranking, giving her an eighth career leader on the survey and her first overall radio chart-topper in nearly 18 years. Released April 18 through Warner Records, the track’s rise is powered by a 50% gain in plays from 24/7 dance reporters and pop stations’ mix show hours during the May 15-21 tracking week, according to Luminate. The song also received an additional lift from a Peggy Gou remix released May 15.
The new No. 1 marks Madonna’s first time atop a Billboard radio chart since December 2008, when “Miles Away” spent two weeks at No. 1 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay. That run capped a strong year for the singer on the chart, following back-to-back 2008 leaders “4 Minutes,” featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, and “Give It 2 Me.” Since Dance/Mix Show Airplay launched in 2003, Madonna’s other No. 1s have included “Jump,” “Get Together,” “Sorry” and “Hung Up,” with “Hung Up” beginning an eight-week reign in 2005.
With eight chart-toppers, Madonna ties ILLENIUM for the sixth-most No. 1s in the chart’s history. She trails only David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Rihanna, The Chainsmokers and Ellie Goulding on the all-time list. Her latest victory adds to a long run of success across Billboard’s radio formats, where she has also appeared on Adult Contemporary, Pop Airplay, Adult Pop Airplay, Rhythmic Airplay, R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, Latin Airplay, Tropical Airplay, Latin Pop Airplay, Holiday Airplay and Radio Songs.
“I Feel So Free” has also performed well beyond the radio chart, reaching No. 12 on Hot Dance/Pop Songs earlier in the month. It is one of two Madonna titles currently active on Billboard rankings. Her collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, “Bring Your Love,” rises to No. 20 on Adult Pop Airplay and bullets at No. 27 on Pop Airplay, marking Madonna’s first Adult Pop Airplay appearance since “Crave” in 2019 and her first Pop Airplay entry since “Popular” with The Weeknd and Playboi Carti in 2023. The new Adult Pop Airplay peak is also Madonna’s highest at the format since “4 Minutes” reached No. 20 in 2008.
“Bring Your Love” is also bubbling under Dance/Mix Show Airplay and debuted at No. 74 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 16, becoming Madonna’s 59th career Hot 100 entry. Both songs help preview Confessions II, due July 3, the follow-up to 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor, which produced Madonna’s first four Dance/Mix Show Airplay No. 1s. Billboard’s May 30 charts will update on May 27 because of the Memorial Day holiday.
