West Ham to Keep Nuno Espirito Santo as Head Coach Despite Relegation to Championship

Nuno Espirito Santo will remain West Ham United head coach despite the club’s relegation from the Premier League, after holding talks with the hierarchy since Monday over his future. West Ham confirmed on Wednesday that the Portuguese manager has committed to staying and will lead the club’s push to return to the top flight at the first attempt.

Nuno, who signed a three-year contract when he replaced Graham Potter in September, and the club both had the option to leave the agreement without penalty after relegation. In its statement, West Ham said the meetings held earlier this week ended with a mutual decision to continue the partnership, with both sides expressing confidence in the direction of the club.

The board said Nuno is highly motivated by the challenge of guiding West Ham back to the Premier League and views promotion next season as the clear objective. The club also pointed to his previous Championship experience, highlighting his successful spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2018, when he won the title with 99 points.

West Ham’s relegation was confirmed despite a final-day victory over Leeds, with the club finishing on 39 points, the highest total by a relegated Premier League side in 15 years. Although the result on Sunday was described as painful, the board said it believes there have been broader signs of improvement and progress in recent months and wants Nuno to continue developing that work.

Nuno’s time in charge has included 37 matches at the London Stadium, with 12 wins during that spell. He took over after Potter had a difficult start to the campaign, losing five of his first six league games. Nuno himself arrived in east London only weeks after being dismissed by Nottingham Forest.

The decision to keep Nuno comes after Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville urged West Ham to retain him and move quickly to secure the future of captain Jarrod Bowen. Speaking on his podcast on Sunday, Neville said the manager and Bowen were the club’s two most important figures and argued that West Ham should act fast to provide stability after relegation.

Neville suggested that a strong incentive would likely have to be offered to Nuno to persuade him to stay, while also stressing the importance of tying Bowen to a new long-term deal because of the financial impact of dropping into the Championship. He said those moves would help steady the dressing room and reassure supporters after a deeply disappointing end to the season.

Bowen later reiterated that he remains under contract and wants to help West Ham return to the Premier League. With Nuno now confirmed to stay, the club will look to rebuild quickly and shape its squad and leadership around an immediate promotion push.
