Rainn Wilson Says The Office Couldn’t Be Made Today for This Reason

Rainn Wilson said in a June 14 interview with Fox News Digital that The Office likely could not be made today because its humor would be viewed as too politically incorrect. Reflecting on the NBC sitcom’s tone, Wilson said the show relied heavily on jokes that pushed boundaries and would likely face stronger backlash in the current comedy landscape. He added that he misses that type of edgy humor, even though he understands why it would be more difficult to produce now.
Wilson starred as Dwight Schrute on The Office, while Steve Carell played Michael Scott, the oblivious regional manager at the center of much of the show’s comedy. The series, which ran from 2005 to 2013, was adapted from the British version of The Office and became known for its awkward workplace humor, offensive blunders, and characters who often failed to recognize how inappropriate their behavior was. Wilson said the core of the series was Michael Scott’s lack of self-awareness, along with Dwight’s own rigid and eccentric personality, which helped create many of the show’s most memorable moments.
He pointed to the Season 1 episode “Diversity Day” as an example of the kind of material that would be especially difficult to make today. In that episode, Michael attempts to run his own diversity seminar, which quickly goes off the rails and ends with Kelly Kapoor slapping him. Wilson said the show “milked” that premise for plenty of inappropriate comedy, but argued that even with the characters framed as fools, the material would still be controversial under today’s standards.
Wilson also noted that he is not deeply embedded in the comedy industry and considers himself “just an actor.” Still, when he hears comedians complain that restrictions have made comedy harder, he offers simple advice: make the characters smarter. His comments reflect an ongoing debate in entertainment about how humor has changed in an era of heightened sensitivity to race, gender, and workplace behavior.
The Office remains one of the most recognizable sitcoms of its era. The show earned numerous Emmy nominations and won five Emmys during its run. Carell was nominated six times, while Wilson received three nominations for his performance. Even after the series ended, its popularity continued to grow, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it became the most-streamed television series.
The show’s lasting influence also helped launch new projects. A spin-off titled The Paper premiered in October 2025 and quickly entered the top 10 most-watched series during its debut week, showing that interest in the world of The Office still remains strong more than a decade after the original finale.
