Rovman Powell Becomes West Indies’ Highest Run-Scorer in T20 Internationals

Rovman Powell moved past Nicholas Pooran’s T20I batting tally for West Indies, reaching 2,314 runs in his 119th T20I appearance, according to ESPNcricinfo. Pooran ended his international T20 career with 2,275 runs from 106 matches. Powell’s record now includes 10 half-centuries and one century, and he remains the only West Indies batter to have hit more than 150 T20I sixes, with 153 sixes to his name.
Powell achieved the milestone during a challenging run chase in which West Indies were set a target of 195. The team was in trouble early at 9 for 2 when Powell came to the crease, but he helped steady the innings with a spirited partnership alongside Shimron Hetmyer. The pair added 81 runs together and briefly revived West Indies’ hopes of pulling off the chase.
Hetmyer scored 36 off 26 balls, while Powell played a counterattacking innings of 43 runs. During his stay, Powell struck five boundaries and two sixes, showing intent and aggression under pressure. However, both batters were dismissed in the 10th over, leaving the lower order with too much to do.
After the dismissals of Powell and Hetmyer, West Indies lost momentum and were eventually bowled out for 157, falling well short of the target. Despite the defeat, Powell’s innings stood out as one of the few positives for West Indies, both for its impact in the middle of the chase and for the statistical milestone it produced.
Powell’s latest achievement further strengthens his standing among West Indies’ leading T20I performers. His consistency, power-hitting and ability to clear the boundary have made him one of the team’s most important limited-overs batters. Surpassing Pooran’s run tally adds another notable landmark to his T20I career and highlights the value he continues to provide in the shortest format.
In addition to his run total, Powell’s six-hitting remains a defining feature of his batting. With 153 T20I sixes, he is the most prolific West Indies batter in that category, underlining his reputation as one of the region’s most destructive finishers. His combination of experience, strike power and match awareness has kept him central to West Indies’ T20 plans, even as the team continues to look for greater consistency.
The innings against a 195-run target once again demonstrated Powell’s ability to lift his side in difficult situations. Although West Indies could not complete the chase, his contribution ensured the contest remained competitive for a period after early setbacks.
