Australia stuns Turkey as former GC striker scores in major upset

Australia produced a major surprise in Group D, defeating Turkey 2-0 in the opening match in Vancouver and spoiling Turkey’s long-awaited return to the World Cup finals. For Turkey, it was their first appearance at a World Cup since 2002, a tournament remembered for their third-place finish, but the comeback to the global stage ended in frustration despite heavy pressure and clear control of much of the game.
Turkey dominated possession and created far more chances, registering 30 shots over 90 minutes, yet they were repeatedly denied by Australia’s defensive discipline and goalkeeper Patrick Beach. The decisive moment of the first half came in the 27th minute, when Nestory Irankunda scored on a counterattack to put Australia ahead. The former GC striker, now 20 and playing for Watford in England’s Championship after a loan spell at Grasshoppers in 2025, beat Merih Demiral and finished calmly to give the Australians an unexpected lead.
Turkey responded by pushing forward aggressively after the break, with Arda Güler and Hakan Calhanoglu trying to drive the attack. But despite their control and repeated pressure, they could not find a breakthrough. Their best opportunity came in the 77th minute, when Kerem Aktürkoglu was left completely unmarked just seven meters from goal in a central position, only to be denied by Beach in a crucial save. Abdülkerim Bardacki also came close, striking the post, but that was as near as Turkey came to scoring.
Australia, meanwhile, remained patient and efficient, waiting for opportunities on the break. Their second goal arrived in the 75th minute, when Connor Metcalfe finished another swift counterattack to seal the result. The St. Pauli midfielder’s strike underlined Australia’s tactical sharpness and ability to punish Turkey whenever the match opened up.
The result leaves Turkey with work to do after a painful opening defeat, even if history offers a small note of consolation: 24 years earlier, they also lost their first match at the World Cup, falling 2-1 to eventual champions Brazil in a memorable contest. Australia, by contrast, will take confidence from a disciplined, clinical performance that delivered three points against a favored opponent.
