Bruce Springsteen Apologizes to Bono After Refusing to Use Song in Commercial

Bono jokingly reprimanded Bruce Springsteen at Tribeca Festival for refusing to license “Girls in Their Summer Clothes” for a Gap commercial tied to Bono’s (RED) AIDS charity. While presenting Springsteen with the Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice Award, Bono recalled asking him to use the 2008 song in the campaign and being told no. Springsteen laughed off the exchange, calling it “a big mistake” and admitting he should have said yes.

The moment came during a warm tribute at the festival, where Tribeca founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal introduced Bono. The U2 singer praised Springsteen as “America,” describing him as a poet of ordinary people whose music carries the voices of the working class. He also honored Springsteen as a musician, activist, and patriot.

During their brief conversation onstage, Bono and Springsteen also discussed the singer’s ongoing Land of Hope and Dreams American Tour, which has featured sharp criticism of President Donald Trump and performances of Springsteen’s recent protest song “Streets of Minneapolis,” written in response to ICE-related issues.

The evening ended with a musical salute. Patti Smith, backed by Tony Shanahan, performed “People Have the Power” in Springsteen’s honor, and Bono and Springsteen joined in for the chorus. Springsteen then remained onstage and delivered an acoustic performance of “Land of Hope and Dreams” for the audience in Lower Manhattan.
