RCB vs GT Qualifier 1: Kohli vs Rabada, Gill vs Hazlewood Powerplay Battle Could Decide IPL 2026 Finalist
After a demanding 70-match league stage, the IPL 2026 playoffs reach a decisive stage with only four teams still alive in the race for the title. The first qualifier, set for Tuesday at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, brings together defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans in a high-stakes battle for a direct place in Sunday’s final.
Both teams finished the league stage level on nine wins from 14 matches, with RCB edging Gujarat Titans to the top spot on net run rate. That balance sets up a compelling contest between one side built around batting power and another driven by a disciplined, wicket-taking bowling attack.
RCB enter the playoff opener with a formidable batting lineup led by Virat Kohli, who has produced another outstanding season with 577 runs, including a century and four half-centuries. His strike rate of 163.82 underlines the aggressive tempo he has maintained throughout the campaign. The return of Phil Salt, who had missed time due to a finger injury, adds further firepower at the top. Salt had already made a strong impact before his absence, scoring 202 runs at a strike rate of 168.33.
The middle order has also been in excellent touch. Devdutt Padikkal has scored 433 runs at a strike rate of 171.82, while captain Rajat Patidar has made 393 runs at 183.64. With finishers such as Tim David and Venkatesh Iyer providing late-innings acceleration, RCB’s batting has been one of the most complete in the tournament.
Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, have relied on a powerful bowling unit to complement a devastating top order. Kagiso Rabada has led the attack with 24 wickets, while Mohammed Siraj has taken 17. Prasidh Krishna, Jason Holder and Rashid Khan have all provided valuable support, giving GT pace, variation and wicket-taking depth across different phases of the innings.
Their batting has been equally threatening. Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill have dominated the Orange Cap race, scoring 638 and 616 runs respectively, while Jos Buttler has added 469 runs. The trio has made GT’s top order one of the most dangerous in the league, particularly in the Powerplay, where fast starts have often set up the rest of the innings.
The early overs are likely to define the match. RCB’s openers will have to negotiate GT’s new-ball pressure, especially Rabada’s pace and Siraj’s knowledge of the RCB setup. At the other end, GT’s top order faces an experienced RCB pace pair in Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood, both of whom have been highly effective in the Powerplay.
Bhuvneshwar currently leads the Purple Cap race with 24 wickets, while Hazlewood has been a steady force with the new ball. RCB also have useful support from Rasikh Dar, Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma, giving them a balanced attack.
With both teams boasting elite top orders and match-winning bowlers, Qualifier 1 promises to be decided by which side handles the Powerplay better and gains early control of the contest. The winner will move one step closer to the IPL 2026 trophy.
