Kingdom Hearts IV Unveils New Trailer, Igniting Excitement for Fans

Nintendo has unveiled the first new trailer for Kingdom Hearts IV in several years during a Direct presentation, offering a fresh look at Square Enix’s long-awaited sequel. The trailer centers on a cloaked figure resembling a member of Organization XIII, who speaks about a newly discovered world where light and darkness seemingly do not exist. The dialogue strongly suggests that the story may take Sora, Donald, Goofy, and new allies and enemies into a modern urban setting, resembling a real-world city rather than the fantasy locations of earlier games.

Originally revealed in 2022, Kingdom Hearts IV has remained largely under wraps since its announcement. Square Enix has shared few updates in the years since, aside from canceling other Kingdom Hearts projects and releasing occasional concept material. Last year, the company published images that appeared to hint at the possibility of playing as Mickey Mouse, but that material was not shown in the latest trailer.

The new footage suggests that the game will continue to build on familiar series combat systems. Sora is shown battling what appears to be a large Heartless creature, similar to enemies seen throughout the franchise. The trailer also seems to bring back the theme park-style attack sequences introduced in Kingdom Hearts III, pointing to a mix of classic mechanics and updated visual presentation.

One of the most notable changes is the game’s art direction. Unlike the more stylized, cartoon-like look of earlier entries, Kingdom Hearts IV appears to be aiming for a more realistic aesthetic. The city environments shown in the trailer feature skyscrapers, traffic lights, and ordinary streets, creating a sharp contrast with the colorful, fantasy-driven design associated with the series. Sora, Donald, and Goofy still retain their iconic appearances and bright visual style, which stands out strongly against the more grounded surroundings.

That contrast gives the trailer a strange and somewhat unsettling tone, but it also marks a bold direction for the franchise. Whether the new visual style will fit the full game remains to be seen, but the trailer has clearly reignited interest in the long-delayed title.

No release date for Kingdom Hearts IV has been announced yet. Nintendo confirmed, however, that the game will be available at launch on the Switch 2, making it one of the platform’s notable upcoming titles.
