Is Stars Hollow Closing? Netflix Update Sparks Concern Among Gilmore Girls Fans
Netflix subscribers may soon lose access to the original seven seasons of Gilmore Girls, with reports indicating the series could leave the platform in July 2026 when its current licensing agreement expires. The potential removal would not affect Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, the 2016 revival that remains available on Netflix as a Netflix Original in the United States.
The possible exit has sparked concern among fans of the long-running series, which became a major comfort-watch title after joining Netflix in 2014. Since then, the show has been one of the streamer’s most popular rewatch options, drawing viewers back to Stars Hollow for its mix of fast-paced dialogue, family drama, and romantic storylines. If the original series does depart, viewers would need access to more than one streaming service to watch the full Gilmore Girls story, including the revival.
At this stage, the move is not final. The report notes that Netflix still has time to renew the licensing deal, and the absence of a removal banner on the show’s page suggests negotiations may still be ongoing. Netflix has previously chosen to extend licensing agreements for titles that continue to perform well on the service, especially when they help retain subscribers and drive viewing activity.
However, the entertainment landscape has shifted since Gilmore Girls first arrived on Netflix. In 2014, Warner Bros. did not yet have its own major streaming platform, but that has changed with the growth of HBO Max. As studios increasingly reclaim their library content for in-house streaming services, older licensing arrangements are becoming more difficult to maintain. That trend has made the future of many fan-favorite shows less certain, even when they remain highly watched.
The revival series, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, is expected to stay on Netflix because it was produced by the platform itself rather than acquired through licensing. While some Netflix Originals have been removed in the past, those cases generally involved licensed originals or regional differences. In contrast, A Year in the Life was made as a true Netflix Original in the U.S., making its removal far less likely.
For longtime viewers, the possibility of losing the original episodes marks another shift in the streaming era, where beloved catalog titles can disappear as rights change hands. Gilmore Girls remains especially meaningful to fans for its nostalgic tone and devoted character pairings, from Team Dean to Team Jess to Team Logan. Whether or not Netflix keeps the series, the report has already prompted renewed interest in rewatching the show while it is still available.
