Real Madrid Holds the Key to Víctor Muñoz’s Labyrinth

Real Madrid can buy back Víctor Muñoz, as it does with other former Castilla players over whom it keeps future options, but only to add him to the first team and not to use him in another deal, in line with FIFA rules and the club’s internal ethics. At the moment, however, Real Madrid does not plan to activate that buyback for the Catalan forward.
Muñoz is now among the 26 players preparing for the World Cup that begins for Spain on June 15 in Atlanta. He earned his place in the national team in his first season in the top division, with Osasuna’s trust helping the Madrid academy graduate make the competitive leap he had already begun to show in his final year with Castilla.
While he focuses on the World Cup and his international challenge, Muñoz is also aware of the growing interest in his future after his strong performances. In his transfer to Osasuna, Real Madrid secured a three-season buyback option, a right of first refusal, and 50% of any future transfer fee.
His agent, Juanma López, has already asked Real Madrid officials what they intend to do about the striker. For now, the current board does not include bringing Muñoz back in its immediate plans for the summer transfer window. That does not mean they are turning their back on the Spanish international, but it does mean a quick return is not currently on the agenda.
From here, several possibilities remain open. Multiple clubs are willing to match, or at least come close to, the €40 million release clause in his Osasuna contract, and the club in Pamplona is aware of that interest. Teams from both Serie A and the Premier League have inquired about his situation and the terms of his deal.
Real Madrid is monitoring developments closely, but if it activates either the buyback clause or its right of first refusal, it would be with the intention of keeping the forward in its squad for at least the first half of next season. FIFA transfer regulations prevent two sales of the same player unless twelve weeks have passed between transactions.
Muñoz’s progress at Osasuna has surprised Real Madrid, especially because he already made his first-team debut under Carlo Ancelotti last season. Osasuna moved quickly to secure him, with sporting director Braulio Vázquez playing a key role. If the forward does leave the Navarre club, one of the first Madrid academy talents Osasuna could target again is César Palacios, another highly rated player who is attracting strong interest but is currently focused on achieving promotion with Castilla.
