Meta Layoffs: Read the Full Email Sent to Employees

Meta has begun laying off thousands of employees as part of a major reorganization aimed at improving efficiency and offsetting other company investments, according to an internal email obtained by Business Insider. The cuts, which started rolling out on Wednesday, affect roughly 10% of Meta’s workforce of about 78,000 employees. At the same time, the company plans to shift more than 7,000 employees into new artificial intelligence initiatives, underscoring its continued push to expand AI-related work.

In the email sent to affected staff, Meta said their roles were eliminated as part of a “continued effort to run the company more efficiently.” The message thanked employees for their contributions and directed them to the company’s Alumni Portal for additional information on benefits, severance, and next steps. Meta declined to comment publicly on the layoffs.

The notice explained that affected workers would enter a paid “non-working notice period” during which their internal access would be removed and they would not be expected to perform any further work. Employees will continue to receive their full salary and benefits through their termination date, and any accrued paid time off will be paid out in their final paycheck. Meta also said vested restricted stock units through the termination date would still be honored under the company’s equity plan.

The company outlined severance terms for regular employees, including 16 weeks of severance pay plus two additional weeks for every completed year of service, minus the notice period. Meta said it would also cover COBRA health insurance premiums for employees and eligible family members for 18 months. A separate, signable separation agreement would be sent to workers’ personal email addresses, and severance payments would require a signed agreement.

For employees whose work authorization is tied to Meta sponsorship, the email noted that immigration guidance and legal contact information were available through the Alumni Portal. The portal also provides instructions for employees who need to retrieve personal items from the office after badge deactivation and system access removal.

The layoffs come amid broader restructuring at Meta as the company balances cost reductions with heavy investment in artificial intelligence and other strategic priorities. By moving thousands of employees into AI-focused roles while cutting others, Meta appears to be reshaping its workforce to align more closely with its long-term product and technology goals. The internal message emphasized gratitude and support throughout the transition, but for many employees, the announcement marked an abrupt end to their roles at the company.
